Here we are, December 2013.
What I learnt this year is that life is not about holding on, neither is it about letting go only- life is a balance of letting go and holding on, a balance of good and bad, a balance of joy and sadness, a balance of summer and winter- each season with its own time; to serve its own purpose.
As much as we want to achieve great things in life, we must understand that with greatness come storms, but if we endure, we will reap great rewards. It is this understanding that keeps us from straying from our purpose, it is this understanding of life’s ups and downs that prevents us from giving up when we’re faced with difficulties.
As we reflect on 2013 and look forward to 2014, I wish you happiness- but I also wish you shoulders broad enough to endure the season of sadness, because you cannot truly appreciate good days until you’ve tasted the bitterness of a bad day. I do not only wish you success, I wish you persistence in the day of trouble. I do not only wish you great victories, I wish you a good attitude when things aren’t going your way. I do not only wish you sunny days, I wish you hope on days of uncertainty. I do not only wish you great friendships, I wish you strength to stand when those friends let you down.
I wish you courage in the face of fear; I wish you character in the time of questioning; I wish you consistency in the time of doubt.
As I type this, it occurs to me that some of these attributes we admire in other people will never be developed in us until we face some unpleasant situations. So, develop a thick skin as we approach a new year and as you progress to new levels of success. Allow life to bring out the best in you- especially in difficult times.
Some of us don’t need more friends as we march towards 2014, we need our current friends turn their backs on us so we can learn to stand on our own. Some of us are guilty of spending years in a job we hate- let 2014 be the year a retrenchment letter forces us to pursue our God-given passion. Some of us don’t need to win the lotto, we need tough times to teach us how to save. Some of us need our current relationships to fall apart in order for us to find better mates. Some of us need those around us to hurt us, reject us and gossip about us in order for us to learn not to rest on anyone’s definition of who we are.
Some of us have become so bored with life that we need rainy days to remind us of the beauty of a clear sky.
Let 2014 be the year of growth beyond our wildest imagination. When unpleasant situations come, remember to keep your eyes above the waves, so you can see the reward of perseverance.
Let the new year find you excited, let it find you hopeful, above all, let it find you ready for greatness… Don’t you quit!
