I always knew I was destined for greatness – Oprah Winfrey.
There’s that intimidating question that always comes up in interviews, “Tell us about yourself.” All of a sudden, you don’t know what to say, not because you don’t have anything to say about yourself but there is so much to be said, where do you begin? As a result, this is a question most of us dread.
When I had to write about myself, I was challenged, I asked that same question: Where do I begin? And so I decided to share things about myself that I have come to appreciate and enjoy.
I was born and raised in a small town in South Africa called Port Shepstone. From a young age, I learnt to express myself through words. When other kids were outside playing, I would be sitting in my room, writing. At the time, my mother was in university in another province and I would write letters to her, updating her on my daily activities. Every time I had a pen in my hand, I felt I could connect with her somehow. My love for writing started then and I never stopped.
I’m a happy person. An optimist. A believer.
I believe in love, I believe in being kind, I believe that there are good people in the world and I believe in the beauty of laughter. I believe in God- I believe also, in myself.
I didn’t always feel this way though, it took me a while to find myself, to understand who I am and then to accept that I am imperfectly perfect for my purpose and my calling. For the first eighteen years of my life, I struggled with my identity, I didn’t know who I was outside of my family . Over the years, I’ve learnt that the key to self-discovery is awareness. Awareness makes you understand why you react in a certain way, why you make certain decisions and opens your eyes to how you can be better.
In my journey to discover myself, I learnt to be quiet and filter out the noise of the crowd and to listen to the voice within me. I became more curious about my identity, my purpose and the desires I have for my life. And through that journey, I found that I have a role to play in making the world a better place. I discovered that there is a God in whose image I was made, formed, and created. I realized that my talents and gifts were given to me for a purpose. That revelation changed my life. It rescued me from my self-destructive ways and empowered me to take responsibility for the time that has been entrusted to me.
I enjoy being around people, my bubbly personality allows that but I mostly love being with myself. I feel that being constantly around people prevents me from truly fulfilling my purpose. I live a very disciplined life because it is easy to get lost in the crowd. I am the kind of person who is always seeking ways to better herself whether I’m cooking in the kitchen, or at working making TV or spending time with my loved ones.
I am big on family. In fact, if it wasn’t for my family, I doubt I would be where I am, doing the things I’m doing- my family has allowed me to dream as big as I want and have supported me through it all. My parents are my superheroes. Coming from poverty, they defied the odds and achieved more they thought possible. I am yet to meet a couple who are as courageous, bold, persistent and humble as they are.
My dad is a gentle giant, a role model to many, a loving father, a darling husband, an absolute king to me. I have seen my dad in all seasons of life- when he had little and when he had much- but he has remained deeply rooted through it all. My dad is a man of principles, he believes in working hard, in honoring God, in gibing back and in living a life of excellence. Of all the people in the world, he is probably my biggest inspiration (and you will find that I write a lot about him).
My mother on the other hand is the one who keeps us in touch with our emotions. She is a lady in every sense of the word. She carries herself with dignity, class and respect. My mother is the one person I have called in every emergency, after every heartbreak, in every storm. My mother holds my world together even at the worst of times. I admire her deep relationship with God and her consistence in living a life that is more than just about herself.
You will get to read more about my siblings in my blogs.
I am passionate individual, there are no half measures with me, I give 100% in everything I do.
I find beauty in simplicity. I don’t like to follow trends, I like to listen to my inner voice and be guided by that so that I can remain true to myself at all times.
I love God, and value my intimate time with me at all times. I view His Word (the Holy Bible) as a letter, beautifully written just for me, His beloved princess.
As you read, you will discover many sides of me, some dark and some funny, some crazy, some emotional, but in everything, you will encounter the real me, undiluted.
I hope you enjoy this journey with me.
